Locals sharing Beautiful Historical Places on the Crystal Coast
Kay and Denard Harris trace their Harris family roots back to the early 1700’s with the migration of Quakers moving to Carteret County. Their family church was the Clubfoot Creek Quaker Church (circa 1760-1841). The fascination for historical places provides the foundation for sharing these places with you. The two venues are: THE VIEW ON CLUBFOOT CREEK and 1100 ON ARENDELL.
The “The View on Clubfoot Creek” dates back to 1872 when Haywood G. Harris purchased the 300 acres for $300 gold dollars. His son, Will Harris, inherited the property and developed a large sawmill operation in the early 1900s. The farmhouse as it stands today was built for the caretaker of the sawmill in 1903. The hurricane of 1933 destroyed the sawmill but not the house; and Denard’s mom, Sadie, and his dad, Haywood, moved in December 1, 1934. This farm homestead is immersed in tradition and offers a special place for both large and small weddings, receptions, birthdays, family reunions, anniversaries, and other special events.
Kay and Denard married while attending college in 1963. After nearly a decade as students, they finally “had to-go-to-work”. In 1969, they started a 30-year run in South Carolina with Kay in the medical field and Denard in the business field. A 1999 return to Carteret County finds them in a 22 year run in the Marina business at Portside Marina. With an eye for preserving historical places, Kay and Denard purchased 1100 Arendell in 2020 and began an over two year process of rehabilitation of a 110-year-old home. “She has Great Bones”, was a frequent rallying cry as we faced one after another challenge. Now with a Charleston style courtyard and garden, this facility is the perfect space for hosting your special day.
The 1100 on Arendell home gets a 1906 early start with the Davenport family land purchase. They moved into the house in 1909. 1100 on Arendell offers a unique, historic Victorian style house and romantic garden for your special day. This property is steeped in history, elegance and Southern charm with all the modern comforts and amenities you deserve for your big event. The circa 1909 home features 10 ft. ceilings with rare Tiger Oak floors downstairs and Mahogany Mantels over the fireplaces. Upstairs there are three large bedrooms with 10 ft. ceilings, heart pine floors and fireplace mantels.
Built in 1909 in Morehead City, 1100 on Arendell has had only four family owners and has survived over a hundred years of wars, depressions, and storms that ravaged the Crystal Coast. From horse and buggy to man on the moon and space craft landing on Mars, 1100 on Arendell is sure to provide the perfect place for your historic events.
Today, restored to its former beauty and with upgraded amenities, we offer this beautiful house and garden as an Event Center for all to enjoy.
